Material – Boots have been around a long time, but one thing has been fairly constant: leather. Historians believe the first pair of boots emerged around 3000 years ago and are today, loosely defined as a shoe that covers the foot and lower leg. But what we think of as a traditional boot these days is a leather upper, leather and molded lower, and a hard sole.

Let’s start by discussing leather. There are six commonly accepted leather types when it comes to boots, and you’d probably find the widest variety in the cowboy boot store. Cowhide leather is the most traditional of all the leathers and the most common. This material is durable, cleans easily, and holds its shape ensuring the shoe fits for years. Ostrich leather is an expensive and exotic hide that some love, but the production process on this type of skin is lengthy, which drives up the price.

Our old friend the goat makes a nice leather as well, which strikes a delicate balance between luxury and affordability. This kind of leather has a lot of pores, which means that is both breathable and very flexible. Goat leather, due to its hue, offers a lot of options in terms of dyes. Another benefit of this source of leather is it softens over time, leaving a pair of boots supple and friendly to the feet once broken in.

Snake and alligator leather are popular due to their distinctive tile patterning and will typically come with a high gloss finish. Snake boots are python and rattlesnakes, the former for its large amount of skin and the latter because they are dangerous, which means cool. The challenge with snake and alligator leather is the natural hinges built into their skin, to own a pair of boots with this material is to require you to do routine maintenance with some oil. Heel – The boot’s heel says as much about the shoe as the rest of the design. High-heel boots are fairly obvious in terms of just what they are, but their purpose is slightly less well known. Back when people primarily rode horses around for transportation, the boot’s heel acted as a hook to keep the rider’s foot in the stirrups. So, higher-heeled boots especially on men are a carry-over from an earlier time where they had a real function.

Cuban and block heel are some of the most common. The Cuban heel is like a D-shape with a flat front and rounded back. This medium height heel offers the wearer just a slight toe drop and puts the weight mostly in the ball of their feet. A block heel, however, is designed specifically for stability. Design – Boots come in a very wide variety of shapes, sizes, and usage occasions. How you select the right boot should probably be determined by where you’ll be wearing the boot, and for how long.

• Cowboy boots are probably the most common design. The raised heel, medium-high run up your shin, and a rounded or pointed toe typically made of leather, constitutes this Western classic.
• Work boots may be the closest descendant of the cowboy boot. These purpose-built shoes help people protect their feet at construction sites, in factories, and just about everywhere else hard labor can be found. Many work boots feature a steel toe, which is a reinforcement around the toe box that keeps the wearer’s feet protected from falling debris. Some purposely leave the steel out and are favored by electricians and people working in environments where additional metal might be the difference between life and death.
• Hiking boots are the next step down from the work boot. These mixed-material shoes protect your feet from the elements while out in the wilderness. Often waterproof and designed with high traction outsoles, these boots come in a wide variety of finishes to suit your outdoor adventure lifestyle.

• Dress boots, our final stop on the boot spectrum, are the newest look in office fashion. Long gone are the days when dress shoes and loafers were the only office wear. Now, a pair of Chelsea boots, or something like a Chukka real dress up a full suit so long as you match the colors accordingly.

Size – There are nine widths in the US shoe sizing system: AAA, AA, A, B, C, D, E, EE, and EEE. The D width is a medium, where EEE is very wide. The most common length sizing typically runs from 5-15 in adults, though sizing beyond that is surely available at specialty stores and Amazon.

Comfort – Boots are often best when fully broken in. It can be very hard to estimate just what kind of work it’s going to take before a pair perfectly match your feet. When you first try on a boot, look for hot spots. Where does it feel like you’re going to have a hot spot? Often you can manage that with moleskin on your feet and moisture-wicking socks. The length of the interior of the shoe won’t change, however, so typically with your heel all the way against the back of the shoe, you want about a pinky width between the tip of your toe and the end of the boot.

Insulation – Boots run a wide range when it comes to insulation. Again you’ve really got to consider the intention of the design. If you’re looking at snow boots you can be fairly certain that some amount of insulation has been built-in to the boot given their cold-weather intentions. Most of the leather and suede boots you see on the market are not insulated unless the sales material indicates that they are. If cold conditions are something you’re going to have to deal with often, consider sizing your boot purchase with the idea of thick socks in mind. This way you can increase the insulation as the temps start to drop with various pairs of warm socks.

Insole – The insole of any shoe should be considered. Often the manufacturer attempts to construct an insole insert that works for the most amount of people, which means it doesn’t work great for anyone. So, when evaluating a pair of boots for purchase just know that if the arch support isn’t there, that’s an easy fix.

Insoles are another way to add, or reduce, the insulation of your shoe. There are fantastic aftermarket insoles now that can help keep the heat radiating back towards your foot. Or, conversely, that is perforated that allows your feet to stay cool in warmer climates.

Outsole – Of the many benefits to the original leather workbook, and similarly the cowboy boot, was that their outsole could be replaced by a bootsmith. These days many of the molded outsoles don’t allow for that, but there is still a good deal of companies out there who believe this is the best way to manufacture a shoe.

Outsoles also come in a wide variety of options. Rubber is the most common because it is very slip-resistant and can also withstand high levels of oil without discoloration. Abrasion is, of course, the biggest issue with an outsole, every step is a tiny little abrasive event across the surface, rubber comes in many forms but often the rubber used in outsoles is highly abrasive resistant.

Thermo-polyurethane (TPU) soles are lighter than rubber and often used in hiking boots. This lightweight rubber-like material is durable, slip-resistant, and resistant to oils and chemicals.

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA) is a foam-like material used in more modern outsoles. This material is very lightweight and creates great stability. Used most commonly as a midsole, allowing the back and front of the foot to move independently, this material is less abrasive resistant but offers great cushion for the foot.

Waterproofness – From rainboots to Chukka’s, men’s boots come in a very wide variety of water resistance. Most leather boots have some seam sealant built into the stitching, but it pays to ask, considering that isn’t always the case. One-piece boot construction is also another way to avoid that pesky water making its way in. Just know that water resistance adds a layer of heat-trapping that you might want to avoid on warm days, so choose wisely.
