Tehachapi Sawmill House

There is no better place to separate yourself from the world than in the middle of the desert, and at this off-grid sustainable home, you can escape from the world in the arid terrain of California. Made from only sustainable materials, this Californian desert home is a retreat for families, with a three-winged setup that promotes privacy. At the heart of the home is a main living area with a fireplace that serves as the Sawmill Houses’ focal point. Inhabitants can go about their separate business and then gather together around the centralized glass fireplace. A fourth “wing” can be created with the turn of a wheel as the 12×26’ wall retracts to turn an outdoor patio into a seamless part of the living space

The Sawmill House was constructed in such a way that it minimizes its effect on the environment while also providing a comfortable retreat. Recycled materials were used whenever possible to promote green living while also ensuring that the Sawmill House can withstand the harsh conditions of the desert.

This self-sufficient home is comfortable regardless of the weather outside, so you’ll never feel like you’re camping out in the middle of the desert, even under the hottest sun. The rugged appearance is a playful take on the home’s isolation that helps give it a personality all its own in a region that’s mostly tan.
