How familiar are you with traditional Romanian architecture? Chances are, you’re not too well-versed in the specifics. We weren’t either until Dumitru Martiniuc and a number of other notable architects changed all of that with Carpat House. The famous designer’s contemporary take on classic Romanian style of home design is beautifully captured in this unique home, located amongst lush forest surroundings near the Carpathian Mountains.
A sleek exterior contrasts the dwelling significantly from its wild woodland surroundings, emulating a technique of timber-burning called Sugi to produce a dark, charcoal-like color on the wooden walls. A rectangular swimming pool area outside is joined by some stone-crafted deck chairs, making even the lounge area into a grounding and earthy experience as it overlooks the natural world beyond. Internal furniture is crafted from wood, metal and marble, with dramatic full-length windows providing a stunning view of the hillsides beyond. Both the bedroom and bathroom areas are generously lit with skylights and oriented glass providing ample opportunity for the clear country air and light to stream in. The most incredible aspect of the house is discovered on entry, as the entire structure has been designed to fit around an expansive and impressive old tree in the centre of the building – bringing the external forestry inwards, and rooting Carpat House firmly into the natural surroundings of modern day Romania.
