Hotel Liberty is situated in Offenburg, Germany, just twenty minutes from Strasbourg, France. The former 19th Century prison is now a retreat with all the contemporary amenities you might expect from a modern establishment.

In 1840, a German architect named Heinrich Hubsch came up with the design, which was completed in 1845. Up until 2009, it continued to be utilized as a jail. The renovation project began in 2014, and was completed in 2017. The new design features corridors that are wide and sweeping, lots of natural materials and a glass wall that is 10 meters tall.

The stonework was integrated into the 38 rooms that were created when former prison cells were connected. The walls were also left intact with old cell doors integrated right into the layout of the rooms.

A glass extension was added, creating a space for the library, a gallery, lounge and contemporary restaurant. The restaurant is aptly named “Wasser & Brot” a sort of homage to the former inmates bread and water diet. On the second floor, you’ll find meetings rooms that seem to simply float in the middle of the air.
